When was the last time you went hiking down the road with a bucket looking for the nearest well to draw water? Yet, there are still people in the world that survive on one water source - one spring, one well, one stream. People are drawn to a water source because everyone needs water for drinking, cooking, washing clothes. Conversations take place, relationships are developed, and news and information are gathered, concentrated, and disseminated at one place: the water source.

If you are over 30 years old, you have seen connectivity through technology grow from a futuristic idea to something merely commonplace. My 12-year-old expects that water will come out of the faucet. With the same degree of anticipation, she expects to be able to connect with ideas and find information about things that are important to her through technology. When the WiFi at home goes down, my kids can't comprehend it. It is as if they turned the faucet and no water came out of the tap.

Turning the Digital Faucet
Digital technologies provide kids with multiple “wells” from which they can draw content that is important to them. It is easy to forget that today's kids have no knowledge of a pre-internet lifestyle. Kids expect to seek out multiple sources for anything they’re interested in. They are accustomed to exploring and gathering information so they can come at it from a number of angles.

Are you a fan of Hannah Montana? If you are, you can watch it on TV on Saturday morning, or you can watch multiple episodes online at Disney.com anytime you want. You can buy an entire season on DVD. You can watch episodes on your iPod in the car. You can download the songs from iTunes. You can go to her concerts with thousands of other screaming kids. The point is, this generation has an expectation to draw their information from multiple sources. They increasingly expect to interact with their interests in a way that is multifaceted and uniquely personal.

Taking a Digital Drink
Integrating Biblical truth into everyday reality strengthens a Biblical worldview and bridges the perception gap between the Bible being merely a book of stories and the Bible being a transformational "light unto my path." Giving kids mid-week access to what they are taught on Sundays helps reinforce the lessons they are learning and provides a practical connection between Biblical truth and their lives "right now." By providing additional access to lessons online, children have the opportunity to personalize lessons in the context of their everyday lives. Helping kids process through a lesson requires asking the right questions.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMj_2g8IWDBHNMSlUNeZ-clGCUe3Kz6wwoM8Y4kPHhVjNm6Qe7IRdgai1qIjbGZNUW-hF2qZFpPFAL_Vg97q5gmqae_aavKGxM60yJLmBAvtN6eE87YBIzjmoZkCt3tcg2Ld1vsF8zimM/s200/987822_95717228.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5517268496393399826" />

What's The Point?
Can you simply communicate last week's lesson in a simple statement, phrase or single word? If you can, you are well on your way to helping a child connect a Biblical truth to a real-life situation. One way to accomplish this is with an online quiz. Google Documents offer a free feature that allows you to create a safe and secure online quiz your kids can access either through email or through your existing children's ministry website. Even though many kids do not have email accounts, most families do. This is also a great opportunity to connect parents with what their kids are learning. One suggestion is to create a sign up sheet at your checkout station that reads:

Dear Parents,
We've created a fun kid-quiz for you and your child to help apply what they have been learning. If you would like to participate, please leave your family email address below and we will email you the link this week.

Sincerely,
Your Children's Ministry Team

The goal of each quiz is to lead a child through a progression of thought from concept to completion. Remember to write questions that will help kids think through concepts, not just quiz them on what they remember. Start by clarifying the concept from the child's perspective and then gradually move them to a concrete conclusion that requires action.

You might start your first question by focusing on a key word or theme in the week’s memory verse. For instance, the focus of your quiz may have to do with "confessing." Therefore, your first question should help clarify that key word. For example you might ask: “What do you think the word confess means?” Then offer multiple-choice answers to help guide the child to the correct definition.

Example:

Confess means to:
a) Be sneaky
b) Be quiet
c) Tell on others
d) Say something out loud

Next, determine what the key word or theme would look like in action. If someone were to "confess," or "be kind," or "love others," what would it look like?

Example:

If someone were to confess something, they would:
a) Think to yourself
b) Say something really loud
c) Tell the truth about what they did
d) Tell a good joke.

Why Should I Care?
It is easy to assume a child understands why it is important to apply the truth of God's Word. But the reality is that often, embedded beneath the surface of a verse or lesson is a practical truth that rests unearthed. This is a great opportunity to help a child discover the depth of God's Word -- that there is more beneath the surface when we take time to look. We can begin by questioning the importance of the concept. Why is this idea important? What would happen if no one was kind, loved others, shared? Great communicators will use a question like this to create a tension in the minds of the audience. Creating a tension through an unanswered question causes the learner to sit up and take notice while creating an appetite for a solution.

How Does That Apply to Me?
What does the point of the lesson look like in the life of an eight-year-old? It probably looks very different than it does in the life of a twelve-year-old. When drawing an application for your kids, start with the world they live in everyday. What would living this lesson look like at home, with a brother or sister, at school or in the car ride home from church? The greater the clarity you have in your mind, the greater the chance your questions will cause a real-life situation to pop into a child's head while they are working through the quiz.

What Does It Look Like In Action?
I can't tell you how many times I've watched kids walk out the doors of a classroom and wondered, "Are they really getting it? Are they making a connection between what was just taught and what life will throw at them this week?"

Often we teach lessons about being kind, loving others, or trusting God and then we try to help kids see how they can apply the Bible to their lives. We tell the story of Moses leading the Israelites across the parted sea and we say, "Moses trusted God in a difficult circumstance. We can trust God in a difficult circumstance." But there still lingers the unanswered question in the minds of our kids, "How will I know when I get it right?" In order for transformation to take place, we must move kids beyond application to personalization. When we say, "be kind to others" or "trust God in a difficult circumstance," use examples from their world. "When you are picked on at school, and you respond like this (insert your real-world example here), that's what it means to be kind." The picture must be so clear that a kid says, "Oh, I get it!" It's so clear, that when they walk out the door, they know what to do or what not to do -- the choice becomes real.

We all want kids to get the point of our lessons. We want them to apply what they have learned. But sometimes there is a disconnect between what is learned and what living life like Jesus looks like in the everyday moments of a child's life. Giving kids access to learning throughout the week can help them apply Biblical concepts in the changing context of their lives.

Being able to process the Bible in the context of everyday moments allows kids to personalize what they are learning by connecting it to their own experiences.

Technology is simply a faucet that draws information from the water source. It takes a message and connects it with kids on their home turf. By creating multiple points of access, we can help kids make better connections with the truth of God’s Word, with its application to their own lives, and with opportunities to put it into practice.

Johnny Rogers has served in full-time children's ministry for over 15 years. In order to see true transformation in the lives of our children we must move beyond application to personalization. We must answer the question, “How will I know when I get it right?” Give kids a picture of what biblical living looks like through drama, movie clips, video, and testimonies both from your leaders and from your kids. Additionally, giving children a measuring point helps them see how they can personalize the lesson. A measuring point breaks down Biblical concepts into Biblical pictures of real-life situations where kids see these principles lived out. We must build a bridge between the seemingly ancient Biblical time and their here and now. Just because children show up in your ministry does not mean they are primed to learn. In order to link the biblical world and what happens on the playground tomorrow, each lesson needs to answer these foundational questions: What’s the point? Why should I care? How does that apply to me? Additionally, when teaching, keep in mind that your lessons should be simple and motivational. Using words and concepts that a child can easily understand will create a more relevant experience. Likewise, a motivational lesson will make them say, “I want to do this!”KIDMOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13340294423861019491noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4908427934533156359.post-52161763706575746622010-01-13T11:11:00.000-08:002010-01-13T11:12:52.839-08:005 Layers of Life Change: #3 RelationshipsChildren are longing for deeper, more authentic relationships as technology introduces a new form of isolation. They are asking, “Do you care about me because you have to, or because you want to?” More than ever kids are translating the message of Christianity through the lens of relationships. It is said, “Kids don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” Through His relationships, Jesus showed God’s love by how he cared for people, especially lost people. The kids that show up in your ministry each week come for a variety of reasons. One of the most significant and transformational elements of your ministry is relationship. Most likely, it will be the relationship with someone who genuinely cares that will allow the seeds of transformation to become deeply rooted in the lives of your children.KIDMOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13340294423861019491noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4908427934533156359.post-14795468884413896392010-01-11T09:23:00.000-08:002010-01-11T09:38:30.329-08:005 Layers of Life Change: #2 FunLearning through play is critical to a child’s development. Child-centered design means creating an environment that is culturally in sync with a child. There is no good reason church should be boring. God is not boring. What’s more, God is enjoyable, playful and yes, even fun. If we are to communicate the message of transformation to children, we must communicate it in a language they understand. Fun is the language kids speak. When our children’s ministries reflect an enjoyable environment, it sends the message, “you belong here.” Children’s ministries should strive to be the best part of a child’s week. It is easier to build ministry-wide momentum when children want to keep coming back. Imagine parents asking, “What are you guys up to? My kid can’t wait to get to church!”

Evaluate these areas when looking at your current ministry:
1) What do kids see when they enter your children’s ministry?
2) What does a first time attendee hear when they enter your children’s ministry?
3) What do families feel when they enter your children’s ministry?
4) How do kids respond and relate to your children’s ministry environment?

Creating fond memories will go a long way to building a ministry that not only lasts, but also is stronger as it grows. Ask yourself, “If kids could drive, would they still come?”KIDMOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13340294423861019491noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4908427934533156359.post-25677296338355690242010-01-02T10:55:00.000-08:002010-01-02T13:55:34.093-08:005 Layers of Life Change: #1 Safety<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 173px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWYCUKS3cGl4Y-gjg783J95MzFxVTAWuqDnG9gFw3i0jFp1saECeNwH12WCjdQyfljzJ98axwTY5uiGs8x9SW5JzEWWp0W1pB2LkCL_3cBQTH4212y7Pp-9ZWTEWUooWQYhfTUjLPJRWU/s200/lolc_figure.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5422264471268887154" />
How do we ensure that our ministry investment truly has impact? Ultimately we want to see the lives of our children transformed through the power of God. We begin by understanding the layers of life change we build into our children’s ministry. These layers are: Safe, Fun, Relational, Relevant, and Personal.

Every child grows best in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe. The first contact with your ministry defines it in the minds of your parents and children. You’ve got 3 seconds before children decide whether they want to come into your ministry or not. Ready, go!

Why must safety come first? If children do not feel physically or emotionally safe, it is difficult for them to become engaged. In order to revolutionize their lives, children must be open to the life-changing message of Christ. The first step down the road of transformation is feeling and knowing they are loved and safe. Nothing melts children’s guarded hearts more than the knowledge that someone has their best interest in mind.

Children aren’t the only ones who need to be convinced of safety, however. Parents now demand that steps are taken to ensure the security of their children, and churches are responding by instituting safety precautions. Statistics are alarming for churches that do not take this issue seriously. Creating a screening process helps protect your kids and volunteers, and communicates to parents that you value the lives of their children.

Creating a physically safe environment demands a firm screening process.
* Written application
* Finger printing volunteers
* Interviews for EVERY volunteer in your ministry
* Background check
* 6 month rule
* Supervision of volunteers (2 person rule)
* Budget for your process

After creating a physically safe environment, your next step should be to train your volunteers to create emotionally safe environments. Emotional safety is represented by affirmation, attention, appreciation, and authenticity. Affirming children is simple and easy to do. Kneel down so you are on their level. Look them in the eye when they are talking to you, practice focused attention, and affirm their positive behavior. Paying attention to children is equally important. Conversing with them allows connections to be established. Conversations can begin with simple questions that send the message, “I’m interested in your life. Tell me about it.” Showing appreciation to children proves “You are valued here.” We can honor children by welcoming them with a smile and a high five. We also honor children by listening more than we talk. Finally, remember to be authentic and genuine. You can show kids you sincerely care about their lives by praying for their requests during the week, asking them about their weeks, and remembering things they share with you in conversations.

Jesus was relational and showed God’s love by how he cared for people, especially lost people. Kids come to church for a variety of reasons. What will make a lasting impact in the lives of children? Most likely, it will be the relationships they establish with people who genuinely care for them. Communicating to children in safe, honoring, and affirming ways becomes our first call to action.KIDMOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13340294423861019491noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4908427934533156359.post-62168698419143096312009-12-10T08:02:00.000-08:002009-12-10T15:57:15.607-08:00Lil K BIG NewsPost Production is complete on the new Lil K "BIG" series! Among other things, relocating meant starting a church search that has had us dropping our grade school girls off at various venues. As a parent, I have become very aware of the range of receptions we have received and of the vast differences in security systems we have seen. Most every church has some sort of system for checking children "in" and keeping account of their whereabouts: some simple and some sophisticated. We make a point of asking about safety screening of adult workers, and have found that, in some churches, teachers, and helpers are required to have full background checks, and others... not. How are you doing in this area?

I'm sure you agree that the safety of the children in your ministry is absolutely essential. One of the best ways to protect your precious pupils and give their parents peace of mind is to thoroughly screen any adults that you allow to work with the kids in your program. According to the The Barna research group, many churches neglect to screen those working with children and youth. You can click here to read the full article at Barna's website and evaluate YOUR ministry to make sure you are adequately protecting the precious ones entrusted to your care.

~cpKIDMOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13340294423861019491noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4908427934533156359.post-89086896149539426832009-09-29T09:48:00.000-07:002009-09-29T12:58:57.941-07:00*NEW* KIDMO Media Gallery!
You can now watch sample clips from every single Johnny Rogers and Lil K Series... and preview our Music Collections in the all new KIDMO Media Gallery!

You can get to the new Gallery by clicking HERE or by clicking

on the product detail page for any series.

We hope this makes your decision-making process a little easier. You are before those whom God has entrusted you to communicate the truths of the Bible that will set on fire the very course of their lives! Every eye is upon you, so great is their attention span and respect for you. Quietly and attentively they absorb every word, nodding in agreement… and the smiling and grateful parents come in at just that moment to pick up their kids! If only it was always that way.

The truth is, there IS a problem. There is a fundamental challenge to teaching kids: They are kids. Now that we have that out of the way… Developmentally speaking, each age group or division will have it’s own unique set of challenges, but it seems in ANY age group there will be one or more of what I will call “Disruptives.” (I’m using this term merely in terms of its interruptive nature, not in regards to the child’s personal nature.) Maybe it’s a result of excitement, or of chemical, emotional or physical concerns. Whatever the underlying root, it manifests itself in interruptive behavior. Those of you who have leaders or helpers who immediately exhort those who pull focus are blessed indeed. But here is what I’ve experienced.

When I am teaching and I have to draw attention to the one who is talking or acting up, I will usually begin to lose those who are paying attention. And if they see that someone else can get away with it, well, you know the rest. There is a certain momentum in teaching. You know what it feels like. And it’s just a bummer when you have to disengage to discipline.

Here is a technique that I have used to help keep that momentum. It involves proximity, you know, how close you are to something. Instead of “using your words” simply keep teaching, and without even acknowledging the behavior, walk over and stand within a couple feet of the disrupter and continue talking to the class. Many times they will get it on the first try. If not, take another step closer. If that doesn’t work, pause, just look at them, and keep going. No words are necessary. You are not giving them attention, if that’s what they are after, and the rest of the class, as well as those nearby, will see that it matters to you. It’s actually kinda fun. It’s a strategy that works for large or small groups. It’s always nice to give them a knowing little smile if they do quiet down. Positive reinforcement and all that.

Try this next time you find yourself in a “disruptive” situation. At the end of the day, we remember those teachers and leaders who have “loved on us,” and believed that we were significant. I do. You can feel the warmth of the bricks against your back. Hands behind, they spring you slightly forward and back as you wait for your name to be called. “Will I be called?” “and, if so… when?” Here, in this tyrannical lineup, choices are made by how cool, how close, how fast, or how nice you are, …or maybe by what’s in your lunchbox. There is nothing longer than the span of time experienced by the last one to be picked. I know this personally… (and, subsequently, I know a great counselor in Nashville). This is the way of things. It’s the qualitative economy of this age and of ages past. THANK GOD it is not God’s economy! In fact, the best stuff happens when we feel entirely ill equipped, unprepared, and when there is absolutely nothing at all in our lunchbox for us to pull out. This is where God meets us. Somehow all that we might think we are is overshadowed by all that God is, and by the inestimable love and value that he has placed on each one of us.

True, God gives us aptitudes and abilities that are innately ours… gifts if you will. You have gifts. Do you have an idea of what they are? If you serve in a church setting, often times you will gravitate to opportunities consistent with your giftedness. Being an “up front” type is great, but then again, taking a child to the bathroom, or pouring juice, or cleaning up the under table carnage of dismembered goldfish crackers and cheerios will set the angels cheering too -- especially when it is accompanied by love. That’s a big one in this economy.

The truth is that you have a story in this economy. It will include sublime successes, absolute failures, near misses, and everything in between. Don’t worry about what you don’t have. Jump up and down for Who has you! So today, thank God for who you are, and where he has put you… and for your special place in the economy of the upside down.

Hey, your name was just called! And guess what, you were the first one picked!

Kai Vilhemsen holds multiple degrees in education and biblical studies, and is the writer/host of KIDMO’s Lil K preschool curriculum. KIDMOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13340294423861019491noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4908427934533156359.post-90744671023451615702009-06-24T13:03:00.000-07:002009-07-06T09:23:12.731-07:00Lil K Show & Tell wins 2 Telly Awards!

We are pleased to announce that the Lil K Show & Tell series received two Telly Awards in this years' 30th annual Telly Awards contest. Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding TV commercials and programs, the finest film and video productions, and groundbreaking web commercials, videos and films.
